In February 2008, the Premier announced his intention to review the subject of prayer in the Legislature, specifically whether it is appropriate to recite the Lord's Prayer at the start of each Legislative day. The Speaker of the Ontario Legislature is consulting with Ontarians and has created a Web site form to collect public input.
My Response Letter
I would like to register my fervid disapproval of the Premier's plan to remove the Lord's Prayer from the Legislature.
Mr. McGuinty alleges that the Legislature needs to better reflect the diversity of the province. The removal of the Lord's prayer or the adoption of a general prayer does not promote diversity but a homogenized and ahistorical religiosity that represents no one in the province, most of all the 70% of Ontarians who are Christian.
Why are our public institutions and politicians so intent on removing Jesus Christ from the public square? Christ is the foundation of this province and country. Even the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms recognizes that our country "is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God".
Our fundamental identity is Christian, and the expunction of Christian prayer from the Legislature is one more step towards the eradication of our common history and any solid basis for a cohesive moral order.
