Italian news reports say pop star Madonna dedicated her song Like a Virgin to Pope Benedict when she sang the classic hit during a Rome concert.
Madonna made the dedication just a few kilometres from the Vatican as she sang for tens of thousands of fans at the capital's Stadio Olimpico on Saturday night, the only Italian date of her international Sticky & Sweet tour.
The Italian daily La Repubblica reported yesterday that Madonna said "I dedicate this song to the Pope, because we are all children of God."
The singer has a history of arousing the ire of the Roman Catholic Church. She was criticized by Vatican officials and leaders of other religions for staging a mock crucifixion during her last Rome concert in 2006.
My Response Letter
Madonna's dedication of "Like a Virgin" to the Pope is illogical, unintelligible, and definitely not newsworthy. Why then does the media pander to her and give her the attention she seeks by defamation? Is it because the media is saturated with persons who hate the Catholic Church because it is unafraid to speak the truth about their hedonistic, me-centred lifestyles? What other explanation is there? The real news story here, and one that will never get written, is that the Pope and many others continue to pray for Madonna and for those in the media.
