What is Catholic by Design?

As many publications and organizations don't always publish or respond to pro-Catholic / pro-Life / pro-values letters, Catholic by Design is my attempt to better disseminate some of the letters I have written. All of the letters defend Catholics, the Catholic faith, and Catholic values.

Why Catholic by Design?

Lumen Gentium, one of the principal documents of the Second Vatican Council, best explains...

"All men are called to be part of this catholic unity of the people of God... And there belong to or are related to it in various ways, the Catholic faithful, all who believe in Christ, and indeed the whole of mankind, for all men are called by the grace of God to salvation."

Who am I?

Jason Gennaro, a Catholic husband and father of five living near Toronto, Canada.

This letter was written after it was announced that pro-abortion and pro-homosexual "marriage" MP Belinda Stronach was invited to speak at St. Peter's College, a Catholic university.

My Response Letter

Dear Mr. Harasymchuk:

I am writing to implore you to reconsider a decision to have Canadian MP Belinda Stronach speak at a September 16, 2008, fundraising dinner for St. Peter's College.

As an institution that describes itself as "deeply rooted in the Catholic tradition", St. Peter's is obliged to avoid scandal and, as the Holy Father mentioned when speaking to leaders of colleges and universities in his apostolic visit to the United States earlier this year, has a "profound responsibility to lead the young to truth."

Ms. Stronach has a lengthy and public history of actively promoting issues that contradict Catholic moral teaching, most notably, abortion and homosexual "marriage." Allowing Ms. Stronach to speak at the school would be a rejection of your duty to ensure that students receive instruction in Catholic doctrine, would weaken the school's Catholic identity, and would inevitably lead to moral, intellectual, and spiritual confusion among students.

In a June 2004 document entitled Catholics in Political Life, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops affirmed that the "Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."

I prayerfully request that you reflect on that statement and the college's actions and cancel Ms. Stronach's appearance.

Yours in Christ,
Jason Gennaro
